USC Annenberg announces a film critic scholarship for the third consecutive year from Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE).
The SPE Fellowship will include a $20,000 scholarship and title and enable the fellow to take part in the 2017-2018 M.A. in Specialized Journalism (The Arts) program.
The fellow will enroll in classes starting in summer 2017 at both USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and USC’s School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) and also work one-on-one with the Los Angeles Times and NPR film critic Kenneth Turan, a USC Annenberg adjunct professor.
The first SPE Fellow '16, Monica Castillo, shares her experience in this video. Castillo is also quoted in The Atlantic. She currently works at The New York Times as a film writer for its "Watching" newsletter. Paola Mardo, the second SPE Fellow '17, tells her story here and here. Mardo is currently a writer for Film School Rejects, a news website about movies, television and culture and hosts, writes and produces her own weekly podcast, “F This Weekly,” where she interviews women of color working in film and entertainment.
Interested candidates for 2017-2018 academic year must apply to the Master’s Program in Arts Journalism by April 29, 2017.
