USC Annenberg Dean Ernest J. Wilson III voiced his support for newly appointed NPR CEO and President Gary Knell, a Center on Public Diplomacy advisory board member, on NPR's Morning Edition show. Wilson, a past chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the not-for-profit organization that flows federal dollars to NPR, said Knell's entrepreneurial method in his current position at Sesame Workshop, the parent company of "Sesame Street," will be beneficial to NPR. "Gary Knell brings to this post a proven ability to work effectively and efficiently — and to raise money — which is critically important," Wilson said. "In other words, he's figured out a business model." Knell said he plans to rely on more nongovernmental funds from private donors, and to use NPR's expertise and resources to generate new revenue. This might take the form of conferences, specifically designed research for clients or capitalizing on NPR's popular digital music.
