Communication professor Alison Trope will speak at a Sept. 21 panel event in Orange County titled "Double Standards and Mixed Messages in the Mainstream Media." Event description: "Media saturation is at an all-time high, and youth are inundated with messages that significantly influence their worldview. Video games, movies, television, and the Internet expose young people to adult themes and often contradictory ideas … and unfiltered access is only becoming easier. The Supreme Court recently ruled that children have the right to purchase violent video games, posing a new and complex challenge to parents. Join us for a discussion on navigating the ever-changing media landscape and determining what is appropriate for young people with media experts." Joining Trope will be Joan Graves, senior vice president of the Classification & Rating Administration for the Motion Picture Association of America and Mary McNamara, moderator and television critic for the Los Angeles Times. Tickets are $45 and lunch/valet parking are included. Buy tickets
