Telemundo to air student's video on parent struggling to pay for children's education

Jennifer Taylor (Specialized Journalism '11) produced a video scheduled to run on Telemundo about a laid-off worker fighting to afford the cost of back-to-school supplies for her children. 

"It’s about an important topic," Taylor said. "Working people all across the country are struggling to give their kids the best education they can."

Journalism professor Bill Celis, who teaches Taylor in "Journalism 584: Specialized Reporting: Education, Youth and Learning" and chairs her thesis committee, said he's come to expect Taylor to produce strong journalistic pieces.

"Jennifer has a keen eye for capturing the subtleties of a story and winning the confidence of sources who are in difficult places," Celis said. "Those traits are truly a tremendous gift for a journalist."

The video will air on Telemundo's "Al Rojo Vivo Con María Celeste," which offers special reports on education from student reporters. It is part of a collaboration with NBC affiliates for "Education Nation."

"I’m glad Telemundo selected the piece, and that professor Celis encouraged me to make it," Taylor said. "I’ve been making films and public TV programming for about 15 years and I often do projects that are partly or totally in Spanish. I’ve also had my films show on television in Latin America, but I think this is the first time I’ve had something originally produced for a Spanish language network."

New Muslim Cool , which Taylor directed and produced, and Special Circumstances, which she co-directed and co-produced, are being streamed on the PBS website for a limited time.
