CPD co-sponsored conference covered in Qatar's 'The Peninsula'

A conference co-hosted by Al Jazeera and the Center on Public Diplomacy at USC Annenberg focused on the Al Jazeera Media Network's role in the region was covered in The Peninsula, a Qatari publication. CPD Director Philip Seib spoke at the two-day event held in Doha, Qatar, on the network's importance during the Arab Spring. “Al Jazeera meant the empowerment of the people of the region. The roots of the Arab Spring are in 1996 and Al Jazeera’s beginning,” Seib said. “Al Jazeera ended the dominance of western media and has given more credibility to journalism. I wouldn’t say that the Arab Spring is Al Jazeera’s revolution, but the network contributed to this change.” Panelists also discussed how different Arab countries dealt with Al Jazeera during the Arab Spring and how the Arab news network will fare in the future.
