Join Dean Willow Bay as she introduces newly-appointed USC Annenberg research professor Kate Crawford on the launch day of her groundbreaking new book, Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence.
In this conversation, Kate Crawford and Josh Kun will explore the Atlas to see how artificial intelligence is “made”: from lithium mines in Nevada to workers in Amazon’s supply chain, to the data that is harvested from us all. Crawford’s new work reveals how the planetary networks of computation are accelerating a shift toward concentrated power, undemocratic governance, and increased inequality.
