AnnLab Fellow preserves and protects Legacy of L.A.’s first Black Newspaper

Arianne Edmonds is a 5th generation Angeleno and founder of the J.L. Edmonds Project, an initiative dedicated to preserving the legacy of The Liberator newspaper, one of Los Angeles’ earliest newspapers, and Black Angeleno history and culture.

As one of the recipients of the 2020–’21 Annenberg Innovation Lab Civic Media Fellowship, Edmonds has been able to “find her tribe.” The fellowship, with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, has given her the space to explore her creativity and opened up her worldview to even greater possibilities for the inheritance she is protecting.
