Former NYTimes reporter and Columbia journalism professor Sam Freedman’s new book is Into the Bright Sunshine: Young Hubert Humphrey and the Fight for Civil Rights. It covers the 1948 Democratic Convention when Humphrey convinced delegates to add a civil rights plank to the party platform.
