Former NYTimes reporter and Columbia journalism professor Sam Freedman’s new book is Into the Bright Sunshine: Young Hubert Humphrey and the Fight for Civil Rights. It covers the 1948 Democratic Convention when Humphrey convinced delegates to add a civil rights plank to the party platform. This conversation with Diane Winston will cover why this history is unknown and how/why a reporter tackled the story.
