Art and design have always been useful tools and an integral part of social justice movements, particularly throughout the Black Radical Tradition and the lineage of political resistance led by people of color globally. These traditions influence fashion, culture and activism with many up and coming designers and curators drawing from that history to evoke change now. Just look at recent Black History Month collabs with Levi’s and Nike and the recent Pyer Moss fashion show highlighting everyday objects by Black inventors. There’s so much rich conversation to be had about the links between art, style, culture-making and social justice. How society shapes art, and how, in turn, art can shape society, and how design and fashion influences culture — what more can we learn and interrogate?
