
Ryland Shaw is a sociotechnical researcher investigating the professional practices and organizational dynamics that shape responsible technology development. As a doctoral student at USC, he studies how tech companies practice environmental responsibility and how the extension of corporate "tech-for-good" initiatives to the climate crisis is changing the future of climate resilience. His work has been shared at venues such as the Association of Internet Researchers, Communications of the ACM, and the ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work.
Most recently, Ryland was a Predoctoral Research Assistant with Microsoft Research’s Social Media Collective, where he explored sociotechnical questions surrounding AI technology development and commercialization. He holds an MA in Communication from Simon Fraser University, where he wrote a thesis on TikTok as a platform for climate crisis communication, as well as a BS in Communication from the University of Utah. He is also an award-winning documentary filmmaker.
