PhD student Muyao Jiang

Muyao Jiang

2025-2026 Cohort

Muyao Jiang is a doctoral student at USC Annenberg, where he researches critical perspectives on how media technologies are produced, used, governed, and subverted.

Drawing from cultural studies, critical political economy of communication, and social and political theory, Muyao conducts interpretive inquiries into the politics of technology as it entangles with political cultures, labor, and competing imaginaries of connection and innovation in the Global South. His research has been presented at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) and the National Communication Association (NCA).

Muyao holds dual master’s degrees in Global Media and Communication from London School of Economics and University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree in English and Advertising from Renmin University of China. Prior to his doctoral studies, Muyao has professional experience (over)working in AI and social media companies in China.

Outside academia, Muyao follows football, contemporary photography, and fingerstyle guitar more than he practices them.
