Where are you from and what were you doing before enrolling in graduate school?
I am from Monterrey, Mexico but have been living throughout Southern California for over ten years now. Before enrolling in graduate school, I was studying journalism and communications studies at Loyola Marymount University and interning with NBC News.
How did you learn of the degree program and why did you choose USC Annenberg?
I had always dreamed of coming to USC because of the way its journalism program focuses on teaching by doing — both in classes and in the media center. What drew me to the MS program was the emphasis it places on training to be a well-rounded journalist. Although I have always wanted to go into broadcast, I knew that learning different skills would make me a better journalist in the future.
What have you enjoyed the most about the degree program?
I have loved learning every element of putting a broadcast news story together from pitching to shooting it, writing the script, and editing. I have grown so much each time I go through the process with the help of my amazing professors and now it has become like second nature. I have also really loved getting involved in the media center, especially with ATVN, where I am now learning how to produce and anchor a newscast!
