Annenberg high school day (AHSD) is a bi-annual program that will take place on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. via Zoom. We will bring together local high school youth from throughout Southern California. Youth will receive hands-on immersive training in journalism, communication, media, and public relations. They also learn about USC Annenberg’s undergraduate programs and services. This program will feature Eduardo Gonzalez, USC Annenberg doctoral student, and Jordyn Holman, reporter at Bloomberg News.

Jordyn Holman is an award-winning reporter at Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Businessweek, where she writes about the changing world of retail, consumerism, and labor. She covers and breaks news on the largest department stores and retailers in the U.S., including Macy’s, Gap and Home Depot and has written Businessweek cover stories on Ben & Jerry’s and Wall Street’s lack of female diversity. Previously, Holman reported on race, class and gender in Corporate America and how companies approach pressing social issues within their workforces. She is also a reporter for Bloomberg’s award-winning podcast on money wealth, The Pay Check, and a frequent on-camera presence on QuickTake by Bloomberg. She is contributor to Marketplace, the business radio show, in addition to her regular Bloomberg TV and radio appearances. She is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Holman is a native of Chicago and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Print and Digital Journalism from USC Annenberg in 2016. At USC, she was a Trustee Scholar, wrote for the Daily Trojan newspaper and was president of the USC chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, which was named best student chapter of the year. Holman continues to be involved in her alma mater by sitting on the USC Annenberg Alumni Advisory Board. 

About Eduardo Gonzalez:

Photo of Eduardo GonzalezEduardo Gonzalez is a doctoral student at USC Annenberg and Journalism. His research focuses on immigration politics and violence in news media and popular culture. Gonzalez’s work also explores the digital divide and disparities in access with economically disenfranchised immigrant communities in the U.S., Latin America, and the Middle East. Gonzalez’s previous research has sought to understand how rhetoric used in popular and political media outlets depict migrant communities and affect political participation and violence, democratization, and censorship.

Workshop: Hate speech, platforms, and resistance 11 a.m.—12 p.m.

This workshop looks at the impact of hate speech online. In this workshop, we identify hate speech, popular social media platforms and platform governance, the implications of these narratives and tangible ways to counteract these rhetorics. This workshop is meant to be an introductory lesson into hate speech and online platforms, and will require audience participation.
