Imagining civic media possibilities through the lens of the black radical tradition
Tuesday, February 11, 2020
3 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Wallis Annenberg Hall (ANN), The Sheindlin Forum (106)
As part of Black History Month, the Annenberg Innovation Lab is taking a deep look into movements rooted in black radical tradition as case studies for civic media and cultural production. Led by current AnnLab Civic Media Fellow Fresco Steez, former Minister of Culture at BYP100, a national black youth activist organization fighting for black liberation, we’ll be in conversation with historical cultural workers and icons Emory Douglas, Minister of Culture of the Black Panther Party, and Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors. Other speakers include Dream Defenders Director of Communication & Culture Steve Pargett and former Director of Communications for the Black Lives Matter Global Network Shanelle Matthews. The event will look at methods and perspectives from the past, as well as from this current moment, to learn how to better equip movements, and the people who lead them, into the future.
