Muller on NPR: "One-man band" journalists are here to stay

Journalism professor Judy Muller told National Public Radio's Las Vegas affiliate KNPR-FM that CNN's recent deploying of "all platform" reporters -- those who combine print, broadcast and online journalism -- is a practice that is here to stay.

“I’ve been teaching students at the USC Annenberg School, and this is what we’ve been training them to do,” Muller said on a show called State of Nevada. “They are learning to be one-man bands. The whole idea that you’re a print journalist, or a broadcast journalist, or an online journalist is gone—you’re a journalist, and you have to do it all. A lot of it is economics… and I think it has to go that way.”

Muller, an Emmy Award-winning television correspondent and National Public Radio commentator, also said there is a tradeoff in terms of the depth of coverage. CNN has also cut back on the number of news bureaus with the addition of the "one-man bands."
