Mayer wins Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching

Communication and cinema professor Doe Mayer was recognized at the Academic Honors Convocation as one of the two winners of the 2009 Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching — “the highest honor the University Faculty bestows on its members for outstanding teaching,” said Lawford Anderson, director of the USC Center for Excellence in Teaching.

Mayer holds a joint appointment between Annenberg, where she teaches communication campaign strategies and designs for social issue and health-defined organizations, and USC's School of Cinematic Arts, where she teaches documentary and fiction filmmaking. She is the Mary Pickford Chair of Film and Television Production and has been known in the Annenberg community as an inspiring teacher with a lasting effect on her students. The $7,500 award recognizes her proven track record and pioneering contributions to excellence in teaching.

“The Academic Honors Convocation is designed to affirm the values this academic community holds dearest — the achievement of excellence in teaching, research, and classroom performance,” said Dr. John Callaghan, University Marshal.

Chi Mak, professor of Chemistry in the USC School of Letters and Science is the second recipient of the 2009 Associates Award. Three teaching assistants will also be recognized: Pao-Chen Li, biological sciences; Zlatina Sandalska, Slavic languages and literature; and Bernard A. Steinman, USC Davis School of Gerentology.
