Undergrads Weisman, Furlong named to list of nation's 100 best student journalists

UWire, a community-driven service devoted to the needs of student journalists, named Aly Weisman (pictured above, B.A. broadcast journalism, '08) and Ryan Furlong (below right, B.A. print/images/news/big/furlong_ryan.jpg journalism, '09) to its list of top 100 student journalists. Just 16 students from the western United States, including one other from USC, were part of the list.

"Aly Weisman is a dedicated, outgoing, and brilliant individual," said Preston Ngo, an associate producer at E! Entertainment. "Speaking on behalf of my colleagues here at E! Network’s “The Daily 10,” we had the tremendous privilege of having Aly as an intern who brought a special combination of book smarts and cultural smarts day-in and day-out ... What differentiates Aly from many folks that come through here is the creativity in her ideas that also reflect her outstanding personality."

Weisman was the lead correspondent for Trojan Vision's "Take 5," and a highlight reel of her clips can be seen at the bottom of this page.

Associates said Furlong, who was the news editor at the Daily Trojan but will be editor-in-chief in the fall, brings a sense of passion for journalism to the paper.

"He immediately committed himself to the position," former Daily Trojan editor-in-chief Laura Keller said. "Most days when I would come into our office, he would already be there working. He also stayed late many nights when other editors would go home early. The morale in the office was much livelier when he was news editor."

The third student from USC, Justin Mandel, is an executive producer for Trojan Vision's "Take 5."

"His dedication to the channel, Trojan Vision, and the entertainment news show, 'Take 5,' is unparalleled," Weisman said. "Justin created 'Take 5' from the ground up and over the past two years, it has grown into a legitimate entertainment news show that has covered everything from the Academy Awards and the Emmys to countless film festivals, press junkets and film premieres."

No other university in the west had more than two journalists named to the list.
