Scheer's Truthdig wins Webby for political blogging

Truthdig.com, a Web site led by Annenberg alumni and faculty that is dedicated to providing insightful and accurate reporting, won a Webby Award — regarded as "the Oscars of the Internet" — in the political blog category. The site, co-founded by communication professor Robert Scheer, also won a Webby "People's Choice" Award in the same category and was a finalist for the best news and political site.

"It’s truly a privilege to be recognized in the company of such fantastic Web sites," said Truthdig Managing Editor Peter Scheer, who received a degree in Communication from Annenberg in 2004. "We’re grateful to the academy, our readers and our contributors for the honor. We’re going to take a five-minute champagne break and then get back to digging!”

Other Annenberg contributors to the Truthdig team include: publisher Zuade Kaufman (M.A. Print Journalism '05); news editor Kasia Anderson (Ph.D. candidate); chief podcaster and contributor Joshua Scheer (B.A. Communication '03); contributor Larry Gross (Communication School director); contributor Marc Cooper (journalism professor); and contributor Bill Boyarsky (adjunct journalism professor).

"We recognize that for online journalism to succeed and be important to a democracy, it must be real journalism with professional writers and editors," Robert Scheer said. "Our goal is to inform and 'dig beneath the headlines' to find the real stories."

The awards ceremony will be held in New York from June 3-5./images/news/big/truthdiglogobig.jpg
