Trojan Debate Squad ends season in "Elite" fashion

The USC Trojan Debate Squad finished the 2007 season with an "Elite 8" finish at the National Debate Tournament in Dallas. USC extended two of its own national records by qualifying for its 45th consecutive Tournament and appearing in its 56th overall.

The USC team of Alex Iftimie ('07, pictured above, left) and Michael Smith ('08, pictured above) advanced to the Elite 8 after defeating three elimination-round qualifiers in preliminary debates. Perhaps their most impressive preliminary round win was a unanimous victory over the eventual national champions from Emory University. Alex, who qualified for the National Debate Tournament in each of his four years at USC, has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in the history of the USC Trojan Debate Squad.

The squad will have a banquet April 21 to celebrate another solid season and the career of retiring director David Damus.
