Student named college photojournalist of the year; wins OPC Foundation Award

When broadcast journalism student Ed Ou (pictured) was traveling across the Middle East in 2006, he had no idea the photos he took and the experience he gained would help him win two major awards.

But that is just what happened, as the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles recently named Ed as its college photojournalist of the year, and the Overseas Press Club Foundation awarded him its $2,000 scholarship at a recent award luncheon in New York. Ed's PPAGLA award included a $1,000 scholarship and Nikon camera gear.

The photos he submitted for the award included images of civilian casualties in the Lebanese village of Qana and other photos he captured during his time in the Middle East. Ed said he wants to cover either the Middle East or Asia after graduating from USC Annenberg.

"Central Asia is an area that has fascinated me for a long time, and the fact that the region is not covered by any Western media just makes me more curious to go and see what's there," said Ed, from Vancouver, British Columbia.
