Grad student wins Buchwald Scholarship for humorous essay

Graduate print journalism student Kimberly Cunningham won the 2007 Art Buchwald Scholarship on March 29 for her humorous essay titled "The Starbucks Drip." She received the scholarship in front of a crowd of Art's classmates, friends and colleagues who gathered to celebrate and honor his memory.

The award, named after the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and USC Annenberg journalism alumnus who passed away in January, "should be anti-establishment and contemptuous of the scholarship he or she is receiving ... If the person is on probation for something that he or she wrote, that should be considered a plus."

Kimberly's essay details her pet peeve: coffee spilling on her slowly enough to stain her outfit, but not fast enough for her to notice until it's too late. "This only seems to happen when I’m trying to look really nice, when I don’t have a napkin, or when I’m trying really, really hard not to spill on myself," she wrote.

Kimberly, from San Diego, Calif., said the award is especially meaningful to her because she wants to be a humor writer after graduating from USC Annenberg.

"It's such an honor to be part of something associated with an icon who is such a part of the history of humor writing," she said.
