USC Annenberg, in partnership with five professional associations for arts critics, presented the first National Critics Conference, May 25-28. More than 400 arts writers, critics, editors, scholars and educators attended this historic assembly. "Critical Unity in Critical Times" was the theme. The presenting organizations include the national associations of theatre, art, classical music and jazz critics. Most sessions took place at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel, with satellite events at nearby musuems, galleries, clubs and theaters. "First-rate arts reporting and criticism helps strengthen cultural institutions and the communities they serve," says Geoffrey Cowan, USC Annenberg dean.
