Communication professor Manuel Castells has been awarded the Order of Santiago, the highest cultural and scientific distinction in Portugal. It was presented to him by President Jorge Sampaio in a ceremony at the Belem Palace in Lisbon. Castells was honored for his contribution to society through his research and study of the Information Age. In a related event, President Sampaio and Professor Castells presented the book The Network Society: From Knowledge to Policy, published by Johns Hopkins University and edited by Castells and Gustavo Cardoso. The book is a result of an international seminar held in Lisbon and organized by Castells. Contributors to the book include several Annenberg faculty members, including Francois Bar, Hernan Galperin, Jeffrey Cole and Jonathan Taplin. Castells will also receive an honorary doctorate in April from the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, one of the leading engineering schools in Europe. He will give the commencement speech to the graduating students.
