Annenberg Radio News wins two first-place awards from Society of Professional Journalists

The Society of Professional Journalists recently awarded Annenberg Radio News two first-place Mark of Excellence Awards in SPJ's Region 11./images/news/big/arn_100p.jpg Annenberg TV News won three awards, including a first-place finish.

"We are thrilled to win the first place awards from SPJ, given that Annenberg Radio News is not yet two years old," Annenberg Radio News director Willa Seidenberg said. "Students over the past two years have put their hearts into producing and reporting for Annenberg Radio News. They do it not just for their own benefit, but because they feel a sense of responsibility for covering South Los Angeles, a neighborhood often overlooked by other media."

Annenberg Radio News won the Radio Newscast category, and Jonathan Horn (M.A. Broadcast Journalism, '09) won 1st place for Radio News Reporting for a report on immigrants' paths to U.S. naturalization.

Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. Entries are first judged on the regional level. Regional award winners will be honored in April at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism.

"The recognition from SPJ is an honor not just for Annenberg Radio News, but for all the stories that need to be told from South Los Angeles," Seidenberg said.

Seidenberg said many students worked on each of the newscasts, but gave special congratulations to producers Chiara Canzi, Richie Duchon and Kaitlin Funaro, and hosts Courtney Kabot and Lata Pandya.

"Our student management team at ATVN works hard every day to put on a quality, informative, interesting live newscast," ATVN associate director Stacy Scholder said. "Students are thrilled to be recognized for their hard work and talent. I have no doubt students at ATVN are developing skills and knowledge they can be proud to use in any professional newsroom in the country."
