Where are you from and what were you doing before enrolling in graduate school?
I was born in Madrid, Spain and lived there until I was five years old. Then, I moved to Brasília and Porto Alegre in Brazil up until my high school graduation before going to Stony Brook University in New York for my undergraduate studies.
I actually graduated from Stony Brook in 2020, but the pandemic pushed back my start at Annenberg for a year. Before enrolling in graduate school, I spent a year in Madrid working as a sports journalist.
How did you learn of the degree program and why did you choose USC Annenberg?
After completing my undergraduate studies, I really wanted to keep improving as a journalist and I also felt like I still wanted more connections. When I pinpointed that graduate school could be the solution to both of those things, I started searching for a school in a big market with diversity, a dynamic program, and the opportunity to meet new people. USC Annenberg fit all of those bullet points to a tee.
What have you enjoyed the most about the degree program?
It’s hard to say just a couple of things because my experience at Annenberg has been very fulfilling as a whole, but I greatly enjoy the creativity that my program encourages. We are free to really report on any idea as long as it’s well-researched, so that has motivated me to step out of my comfort zone and delve into worlds I never thought I would be so interested in.
I would be remiss if I also didn’t mention the media center. Working alongside my peers across all journalism programs and media center desks has been extremely rewarding. I have no doubt that my time there has improved me as a journalist and will play a role in my life for years to come.
