Where are you from and what were you doing before enrolling in graduate school?

I am a bilingual first-generation Mexican-American director, writer and producer from Los Angeles, California. If David Fincher and Guillermo Del Toro had a secret love child, it would be me. I love Fincher’s cerebral approach to films like “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” with sprinkles of Del Toro’s gothic romance sensibilities.

I’m currently the head of video production for the Consul General, Ambassador Carlos González Gutiérrez at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles and my video work has been highlighted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as showcased by President Claudia Sheinbaum during the daily morning “La Mañanera” presidential press conference, addressing the country.

I dedicate my life to family, building community and the entertainment industry; to me, they represent integrity, awareness, and catalyst for change.

I have served on the Community Advisory Board at KCET / PBS for six years, 2007–2013 four as chair of the Hispanic Heritage Committee, one as vice chair for the overall board and culminating with the final year as chair. After KCET, I joined the board of directors for the Expediente Rojo Project for four years, 2012–2016. The Expediente Rojo Project is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit that bridges the gap between law enforcement and the Latino community. In 2019, I was a guest speaker for Edward James Olmos’ Youth Cinema Program. In addition, I also served as part of the Diversity in Cannes Film Festival screening committee, 2019-2021.

In 2020, I won the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) Television Writers Fellowship sponsored by ABC, Disney and NBC Universal. I’m currently a volunteer for Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.), where I actively participate in the designated driver initiative program in partnership with the NFL and the Los Angeles Rams.

By combining the program’s strengths in communication and media with business, technology, and social sciences, I’ll be able to hone my storytelling skills, explore new mediums, and develop a deeper understanding of how to connect with global audiences on an emotional level.

What have you enjoyed the most about the degree program?

I’m grateful to be part of a community that encourages exploration and growth. The diverse faculty and students at USC have pushed me to consider different perspectives, enriching my storytelling and emotional resonance. The program has allowed me to combine my passions for storytelling, psychology, and technology to create innovative experiences that resonate with audiences.

I’ve gained valuable skills in research design, data analysis, and problem-solving. I’ve learned to ask the right questions, collect and analyze data, and use it to drive informed decisions. These skills have been invaluable, enabling me to evaluate information critically and make informed decisions, even in uncertain situations. I’m excited to apply these skills to drive impact and create meaningful connections with audiences worldwide.
