Where are you from and what were you doing before enrolling in graduate school?
I grew up in Chongqing, China. People on social media also refer to it as a “3D city” due to its remarkable breadth and depth. Check out the account @inchongqing on Instagram, and you will get an idea of what I’m talking about. I believe the city’s diverse landmarks and the intricate blend of culture, media, and people have significantly influenced my passion for communication.
Before embarking on my graduate school journey, I completed my bachelor’s degree at Boston University. There, I specialized in advertising and minored in education, driven by a belief in the immense potential to positively impact others and effect meaningful changes. Throughout my undergraduate years, I was active in several student organizations, engaging in communication-related tasks such as ad strategy and event planning. One particularly meaningful experience in my last year at BU was joining a campus-wide initiative called “Student Wellbeing,” dedicated to supporting students’ health and well-being. Furthermore, my internships in diverse companies focused on marketing and organizational communications, providing valuable insights into these fields. These experiences allowed me to apply my knowledge in practical settings, working with real clients and assisting brands in connecting with their target audience.
How did you learn of the degree program, and why did you choose USC Annenberg?
I got to know the communication management program at USC Annenberg for its strong reputation among peers in related fields. Before enrolling, I conducted extensive research on various programs, and USC Annenberg consistently stood out. My decision was further informed by valuable insights gained from conversations with CMGT alumni and current students. Their experiences and perspectives provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the program’s strengths and unique offerings.
One aspect that particularly attracted me was the diverse range of classes offered by the program, providing a well-rounded and comprehensive learning experience. Additionally, the flexibility to register for classes in other schools (e.g. Business, Engineering, and Cinematic Arts) presented an exciting opportunity to broaden my knowledge and skills beyond communication studies. This interdisciplinary
approach aligned perfectly with my academic and professional goals.
What have you enjoyed the most about the degree program?
Firstly, the program fosters an elite and tight-knit community, creating an environment where collaborative learning and support thrive. Furthermore, for international students like myself, navigating job opportunities can be challenging. However, the program’s director and advisers play a pivotal role in easing this process by actively supporting us and sharing valuable resources and opportunities. One of the most exciting aspects of the program lies in its faculty. They are all industry leaders from various fields who bring real-world expertise to the classroom. It is not uncommon to enter a session and discover that the day’s guest speaker is a CEO or VP from a renowned company. This exposure to industry leaders imparts a dynamic and practical dimension to our learning experience, rendering each class a unique and enriching opportunity.
