Somebody knows something: Risk and cultures of finance in United States television with Pete Johnson
Monday, March 24, 2025
Noon – 1:15 p.m. PT
USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism (ASC), 207
This talk builds upon Pete Johnson’s current project on the material and discursive development of U.S. television’s financial model from the network era to the streaming era. Specifically, it draws from a chapter examining how television studios in the 1980s and 1990s mitigated production deficits by leveraging global distribution networks and foreign pre-sales — a strategy that challenges traditional risk-reward frameworks in filmed entertainment and the truism that the few hits offset the many misses.
