Rural Reporting in Oregon: Immersive reporting program info session

Thursday, October 31, 2019

2 p.m. 3 p.m.

Wallis Annenberg Hall (ANN), 309

WANTED: adventurous, talented, inquisitive students for an immersive two week rural reporting experience in beautiful Eastern Oregon. Dates: May 17 to May 30. Two credits.

Our “BEYOND THE BUBBLE” course will give you the chance to report for the Malheur Enterprise, an award-winning weekly with a vigorous online presence serving the most impoverished county in all of Oregon. Students will also have a chance to publish their work with various broadcast outlets, including PBS. At a time when the country is deeply divided between urban and rural cultures, students will learn to interview people of markedly different backgrounds, to identify their own biases (their own “bubbles”), and to work as a team while meeting tight deadlines.

We are extremely fortunate to be partnering with Les Zaitz. He took over as editor and publisher of the Malheur Enterprise in 2016 after retiring from The Oregonian, where he had been the senior investigative reporter and winner of many awards, including finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Join instructors Rebecca Haggerty and Judy Muller for an information session about the program. This program is open to all sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students. Journalism experience is strongly encouraged. Contact Rebecca Haggerty at rhaggert@usc.edu) and Judy Muller at jmmuller@usc.edu) with questions.

The program runs from May 17 – 30, 2020. Applications due Thursday, November 7.
