Since the end of World War II, we have been living in what is often dubbed “the American Century,” a period during which the United States has enjoyed unrivaled power on the global stage. Born on the cusp of this new era, Joseph Nye has spent a lifetime illuminating our understanding of the changing contours of American power and world affairs. In his memoir A Life in the American Century (Polity 2024), Nye shares his own journey, as he witnessed American power up close and envisions the future of the country with guarded optimism.

Nye is a university distinguished service professor emeritus and former dean of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He also served as assistant secretary of defense for International Security Affairs, Chair of the National Intelligence Council, and Deputy Undersecretary of State. He is a world-renowned authority on American power in the modern era whose work has influenced generations of scholars and practitioners.
