Wednesday, March 26, 2025
Noon – 1:15 p.m. PT
USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism (ASC), 207
Today, social media is fully plumbed out with fintech. Formerly niche practices have become part of popular economic culture: cryptocurrency, gamified investing apps, buy-now-pay-later, sports betting. The economy has changed underneath our feet, and we aren’t prepared to navigate it. We need to understand these changes, why they are happening, and how we should react to them. This talk draws from previous research on money as communication and current research on how people are making sense of their increasingly complex economic worlds. The goal is not just to understand the emergence of new financial subjectivities but to inform policy and other interventions.
