Online communities are rich spaces for social interaction, including collaborative knowledge production, learning, and innovation. However, user participation varies greatly among members in online communities; less active members tend to receive fewer benefits and lower status within the community. Marlon Twyman is an assistant professor of communication at USC Annenberg and a member of the Annenberg Networks Network. His work focuses on social dynamics that evolve during the digital collaborations commonly found in online communities. In this talk, he will be discussing how social inequalities emerge in online communities and explaining his current research agenda that includes investigating multiple online communities to better understand online inequality.
