Annenberg Research Seminar: ‘Enclosing Los Angeles,’ a talk about education and prisons in the City of Angels

Monday, March 26, 2018

Noon 1 p.m.

USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism (ASC), 207

Taking an insider’s perspective, Damien Sojoyner’s First Strike examines the root causes of California’s ever-expansive prison system and disastrous educational policy. Re-centering analysis of Black masculinity beyond public rhetoric, it critiques the trope of the “school-to-prison pipeline,” exploring the realm of public school as a form of “enclosure” that has influenced the schooling (and denial of schooling) and imprisonment of Black people in California.

Damien Sojoyner is an assistant professor at the University of California, Irvine.

Lunch will be served. No RSVP needed.
