How does technology mediate the relationship between capitalism and cultural production in media industries? In this talk, Petre will share findings from two research projects that shed new light on this enduring question. The first study examines how media-industry unions are strategizing and bargaining around generative AI; the second study investigates how the rise audience metrics shaped the work of online content production. Analyzing these cases through a labor lens, Petre shows how emerging technologies provoke a strong reaction from media workers that can, in turn, shape the configuration of contemporary media industries.
