How to apply to an Annenberg Minor

A full list of minors currently offered at USC Annenberg and their course listings can be found here. Students admitted to an Annenberg minor are admitted to the current catalogue year and will see those requirements reflected on their STARS report.

Students who have not been admitted to the communication major or one of the minors may complete a maximum of 20 communication units at USC. No further communication courses may be taken until the student is admitted. 

Admission Standards

To be eligible to apply for a minor in Communication Policy and Law; Communication Technology Practices and Platforms; Cultural Diplomacy; Culture, Media, and Entertainment; Justice, Voice and Advocacy; Media Economics and Entrepreneurship; Professional and Managerial Communication; or Sports Media Studies students must have:

  • A declared major
  • 3.0 USC cumulative GPA
  • 32 units completed (sophomore standing)

Note for communication majors: Please note that communication majors can only minor in the following three communication minors: Cultural Diplomacy, Media Economics and Entrepreneurship, or Sports Media Studies. None of the other communication minors can be completed with the communication major. Communication majors can pursue any journalism/public relations minor.

To be eligible to apply for a minor in Advertising, Food Journalism and Public Relations, Latinx News Media, News Media and Society, or Podcasting, students must have:

  • A declared major
  • 2.0 USC cumulative GPA
  • ADV minor: requires a minimum of three semesters to complete

Note for journalism or public relations majors: Please note that journalism or public relations majors cannot minor in any of the listed journalism/public relations minors. Journalism/public relations majors can pursue any communication minor.

To be eligible to apply for a minor in Public Relations or Sports Media Industries, students must have:

  • A declared major
  • 2.5 USC cumulative GPA
  • PR minor: requires a minimum of three semesters to complete

Note for journalism or public relations majors: Please note that journalism or public relations majors cannot minor in any of the listed journalism/public relations minors. Journalism/public relations majors can pursue any communication minor.

Application Requirements

The documents below are required. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

NOTE: The Admission Committee will review students’ academic records (transcripts and transfer credit statements) on the university system. Students accepted to an Annenberg minor will be admitted to the semester in which they apply. 

Application Availability, Deadline and Notification

Fall applications are made available on July 1.

  • Fall applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on the first Friday of the Fall semester (in August).
  • Fall applicants will be notified on Friday of week four of the Fall semester (in September).

Spring applications are made available on December 1.

  • Spring applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on the first Friday of the Spring semester (in January).
  • Spring applicants will be notified on Friday of week four of the Spring semester (in February).

Summer applications are made available on April 1.

  • Summer applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on the first Friday after commencement (in May).
  • Summer applicants will be notified two weeks after the deadline (in June).
