What impact did your graduate experience have on your professional trajectory?
My graduate experience helped me better understand the importance and value of a network. It’s pretty safe to say I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for a recruiter who found my resume on the USC Career Board site and reached out. As a grad student, having a secure job was key and getting to be able to share my experience on a platform other than LinkedIn definitely helped set me apart.
What from your USC Annenberg education best equips you to face the challenges of your field today?
Pitching in front of established brands and organizations. There’s nothing better than getting some practical (albeit sometimes terrifying) experience, like we had when we presented a project or idea in front of a room of executive leaders at a major entertainment studio. I’m currently in a role where pitch meetings happen at least five times a week. Much better getting the shakes out in front of classmates than a million-dollar client.
What advice would you give for someone considering graduate studies at USC?
Do some digging on classes, professors, and consider the things you ultimately want out of the program. Is it the degree? Is it the network? Is it a better understanding of a particular industry or program in a more practical sense? This will help ensure you go all in for the right reasons.
What is the one thing that a USC Annenberg student ought to take advantage of while enrolled?
Networking events (even if they are virtual!) and connecting with career counselors. Invaluable resources you’ll have forever.
