Where are you from, and what were you doing before enrolling in graduate school?

I hail from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and serve as a programme associate for the United Nations. My focus lies on SDG 11, which pertains to the development of sustainable cities and communities. Additionally, I am the focal point for diplomatic missions and government delegations and execute international conferences and forums. I derive immense satisfaction from providing humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping in the field. My first field experience was during the Sudan conflict in 2023, where I had the honor of contributing to evacuating UN and INGO personnel. After graduation, I plan to use public diplomacy to build peace in conflict zones.

How did you learn of the degree program and why did you choose USC Annenberg?

During my tenure at the United Nations, I have had the opportunity to work on various cross-cutting projects that have enabled me to expand my knowledge and expertise. One project that particularly caught my attention was related to public diplomacy. I felt curious about it and decided to explore it further. As I delved deeper into the subject, I became increasingly drawn to it and developed a strong passion for it.

As someone from a country that is often misunderstood, I believe that public diplomacy can play a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding and strengthening relations between nations. In light of this, I have taken a keen interest in specializing in public diplomacy, particularly given the new vision of Saudi Arabia.

After conducting extensive research, I discovered that the University of Southern California was at the forefront of public diplomacy education, with a program that is exclusively focused on this important field. I was particularly impressed that USC’s Public Diplomacy Program is housed under the School of Communication and Journalism, as I believe that the effective communication of ideas and messages is essential to successful public diplomacy.

What have you enjoyed the most about the degree program?

I am pleased to say that the program I attended was a great fit and similar to my work. It helped me fill in the gaps that had been puzzling me and provided me with the skills and knowledge I needed in public diplomacy. The professors were excellent, offering practical knowledge based on their own experiences in the diplomatic field, as well as theoretical and historical knowledge. I also enjoyed attending events and listening to speakers that enriched my knowledge and broadened my vision. My participation in the Society of Public Diplomats was a defining experience, and my role as the editor-in-chief of the public diplomacy magazine afforded me the opportunity to develop new skills. The program has left me enthusiastic and motivated to return to my profession with renewed vigor and a fresh perspective.
