What Makes Us Different

Journalism MS

In a unique team-taught environment, students emerge as versatile, self-sufficient reporter/producers/writers. They work as journalists covering news in Los Angeles and across Southern California. Through their classes, reporting, and interaction with the state-of-the-art Media Center, students also learn critical thinking, decision-making, ethical responsibility, teamwork, coding, and communication skills. The goal is for students to acquire a full set of storytelling tools that can be applied to any topic on any media platform.

Specialized Journalism

Students create a tight cohort of passionate and talented writers and producers with all levels of experience who work together in a unique interdisciplinary environment focusing equally on skills and content. You will create radio and film documentaries, long-form literary and investigative journalism, interactive multi-media experiences and deadline coverage of breaking news. To enhance their subject area expertise, students can select courses from any of USC’s world-renowned schools and research centers, including law, engineering, cinema, medicine, gaming, the brain and creativity, multimedia literacy, civic engagement and dozens more.

Specialized Journalism (The Arts)

Our program offers students the opportunity to study with award-winning faculty from USC’s six arts schools, as well as from USC Annenberg’s School of Journalism. Students are granted access into USC's prestigious arts schools in Master's level courses as journalists and/or artists who want to learn journalism's best practices in order to communicate meaningful stories, analysis and reports. Our students work together in the Media Center with one-on-one journalism mentoring to produce professional-level multimedia work. Students' arts journalism is published in Ampersand, an online arts and culture magazine that is student run. We are also known for embedding journalists inside arts institutions and organizations where they work on staff as in-house arts journalists.
