More Christopher Holmes
Christopher H. Smith is a Clinical Professor in the School of Communication at USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism where he also serves as co-director of the Media, Economics, and Entrepreneurship program.
Smith is an expert on media, entertainment, and popular culture. He teaches seminars dedicated to these and other subjects in both the undergraduate and doctoral degree programs. His current research focuses on political economy, the consumer society and the rise of free market individualism between the 1970s and the present. He is particularly interested in the relationships between neoliberal economic philosophy and racial formation and identification in the post-Bretton Woods era. He also conducts research, teaches, and writes about financial discourse and the popularization of financial knowledge & practices in everyday life, convergence in digital entertainment & information industries, the millennial generation and the multicultural consumer, and issues in celebrity culture.
Smith's scholarship and commentary have been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Social Text and the International Journal of Communication. He has been featured on a number of large media outlets -- including MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, NFL Network, Today, Bloomberg Businessweek, KTLA-TV, NPR, the BBC, CBC-Radio Canada, Reuters, and TV4 Sweden. He has also written feature stories on leading figures in business and entertainment for mainstream periodicals and digital publishers such as The Washington Post, AOL.com, Elle, Interview, Black Enterprise, The Source, XXL, and Vibe.
Before joining the faculty at USC Annenberg, Smith served as the director of Primary Research for Ruder Finn Public Relations in New York City.
Smith earned his doctoral and master's degrees in media and cultural studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Chicago. Smith lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.
