Sigal writes about the role of the First Lady

Professor Emeritus, Clancy Sigal

Journalism professor emeritus Clancy Sigal wrote an op-ed for Counterpunch in honor of Michelle Obama's birthday titled: "Happy Birthday, FLOTUS." Sigal's piece says that a First Lady should look to Eleanor Roosevelt as an example of how the role should be fulfilled. "This shrewd, restless, sexually unfulfilled, determined, emotionally generous woman earned the love of a broken nation because we believed she was on our side fighting for us," said Sigal about Mrs. Roosevelt.

"Here's how a first lady does her job," wrote Sigal.

"Unlike Michelle," wrote Sigal, Eleanor "went down into coal mines to investigate miserable conditions...and helped set up camps for the dispossessed homeless – like those today within sight of Michelle's East Wing office..." "If there ever was a time when we needed an angry black woman – the label Michelle keeps refusing – now, on the verge of yet another war, this time with Iran, is the time," Sigal wrote.
