Sasha Anawalt, associate professor and director of USC Annenberg’s Arts Journalism Programs, was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about the 20th anniversary of Tony Kushner’s play, “Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.”
"I remember the nurse in 'Angels,'” Anawalt said, "who was so like the nurse at our friend Mark Locher's bedside. Mark died of complications from AIDS, as we were taught to say.”
The 1992 play brought awareness to the ever-present gay community and burgeoning gay rights movement, as well as the devastation caused by AIDS.
“Kushner spoke to me of my own loss, but I knew it was bigger than that,” said Anawalt. “I knew this play was bigger. Which told me we’d get past this.”
Anawalt can also be heard on KUSC’s Arts Alive on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 8 a.m. to discuss the movie, "American Masters Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance," that is based heavily off of her book on the Joffrey Ballet.
