Social Media Strategy

Laura E. Davis has dedicated her career to practicing, studying and teaching digital journalism. She started her career as a reporter for The Associated Press, covering a pivotal moment for the same-sex marriage movement in California.

After working for the AP in Los Angeles and on the national desk in New York, she became an editor at Yahoo News. There, she edited the homepage, ran blogs on the 2010 midterm election and the royal wedding, covered same-sex marriage and the Supreme Court, oversaw Yahoo News’ social media strategy, developed projects for user generated content and worked on the politics desk as a text and digital editor.

She then went to the Los Angeles Times, where she was the deputy mobile editor. She sent the newspaper’s first-ever push notification and helped develop mobile strategy. She also worked on the social media desk and better integrated breaking news into the newsroom’s workflow, building out a strategy that incorporated social media, mobile, email and the homepage.

While she was at the L.A. Times, she started as an adjunct professor at USC Annenberg, teaching Introduction to Online Media.

Her passion for mobile journalism took her to BuzzFeed News, where she was on the team that developed and launched the BuzzFeed News app.

Her specialties on the team were social media sharing and push notifications, helping to influence the industry’s approach to the medium. In addition to working with students at USC, she has also been a mentor for high school journalists since 2006 through the YMCA’s Youth and Government program
