USC Annenberg journalism professor
Felix Gutierrez and two Annenberg alumni co-authors received the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Medallion for Excellence in Research About Journalism on July 9 at the National Press Club banquet in Washington, D.C. Gutierrez is co-author with Howard University professor Clint C. Wilson II and California State University Los Angeles professor Lena M. Chao of the book, Racism, Sexism, and the Media: The Rise of Class Communication in Multicultural America, chosen by SPJ for its 2003 Research About Journalism Award. Considered by many the top national journalism research award, the Society of Professional Journalists honor recognizes the year's best research for its "value to the profession, significance of the subject matter, thoroughness of research, and soundness of the conclusion." Both Wilson and Chao earned USC School of Journalism master's degrees before earning doctorates in other USC programs.
