Hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute, David Shambaugh traces China’s development since thirty years ago when its role in global affairs was relatively minor and limited to East Asia. China’s growing economic power has given the nation access to other industries, from mineral mines in Africa, to currency markets in the West, to oilfields in the Middle East, to agribusiness in Latin America. He demonstrates China’s ambition by pointing to its growing military power and presence in diplomatic affairs, as well as the role it plays in world commercialism. In spite of its astronomic growth, Shambaugh argues that China’s influence is still more broad than deep and lacks the influence attributed to a major world power. Instead, it is a “partial power.”

Please join students and faculty for the research seminar co-sponsored by the Center for Feminist Research Working Group on the Politics of Popular Music titled “How Punk Freed Females."

British girl bands like the Slits and the Raincoats created the "impossible"-- an entirely new paradigm for pop. As the first generation of self-defined female musicians, they all experimented with what had seemed like a theoretical question: what is the sound of girls making a music of their own? Yet somehow, in the early 1990s rush of Riot Grrrl as the face and sound of feisty young womanhood, these female counterparts of The Clash and The Gang of Four were all but forgotten, particularly in America. First Wave Punk females in the UK are the missing link in the lineage of women's contribution to pop.

USC Annenberg California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships discussion

Join communication professor Christopher Holmes Smith for a research presentation by Professor Mitchel Abolafia, entitled, “Fine-tuning the Signal: Image and Identity at the Federal Reserve.” From Prof. Abolafia: “This paper develops a conceptual model of the process used by elite policy makers to adjust the signals sent to stakeholders outside the central bank. Such signals are employed to influence immediate economic behavior as well as maintain longer-term agency reputation. Using verbatim transcripts of meetings at the Federal Reserve, this paper develops a model of fine-tuning practice that is employed by policy makers to store up trust, anticipate threats, and rationalize failure to stakeholders. Ultimately, the effectiveness of these strategies is tied to the organization’s ability to impose its definition of reality on its audience and to maintain or build its own legitimacy.”

RSVP requested.
Highly renowned international documentary filmmaker Bregtje van der Haak of VPRO (Dutch Television) is offering a special screening and first look at her most recent documentary, “DNA Dreams." This film documents the undertaking of Chinese scientists who are attempting to analyze and potentially clone the DNA of 2,000 highly gifted children.

China has been on the forefront of cloning research and technology, and the implications of their projects are far reaching. “DNA Dreams” poses the questions: What if we could identify the gene that contains information about human intelligence? Would a brave new world be waiting for us?

Come join us for this exceptional event which will include a live discussion with the film's director, Bregtje van der Haak, and University Professor Manuel Castells. Reception and light refreshments to follow.

Adjunct journalism professor Jeff Fellenzer welcomes Sam Cunningham, John Papadakis and legendary Mater Dei High football Coach Bruce Rollinson to his Journalism 380: "Sports, Business and Media in Today's Society" class for a discussion on "Breaking The Huddle: The Integration of College Football."

Focusing on football programs in the Southeastern, Southwest and Atlantic Coast Conferences, "Breaking The Huddle: The Integration of College Football" chronicles the heyday of football programs at historically black colleges and universities, and explores the profound effect of the Civil Rights movement of the '60s on the racial status quo of college athletics. The story culminates with the Sept. 1970 game played in Birmingham between the University of Southern California, featuring star African-American running back Sam "Bam" Cunningham, and the University of Alabama team of legendary Crimson Tide head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

After the film, Mr. Cunningham, Mr. Papadakis and Mr. Rollinson, who all played on that 1970 USC team, will join Professor Fellenzer for a panel discussion about the game, the players and the game's impact and legacy, which set the stage for athletic, racial, cultural and historical changes that continue today. The panel will discuss race and racism in sports, the growth of college sports and college football in particular, and how sports can be a change agent in our society.

Journalism Director’s Forum: Hearst Visiting Professionals

The Annenberg Research Network in International Communication welcomes Kevin Werbach, Associate Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, for a discussion of “gamification.”

From Prof. Werbach: Recognizing the tremendous scale and influence of digital games today, a growing number of companies are using game design techniques to engage customers and motivate employees. These same "gamification" concepts can be applied outside the business world, in fields such as education and public policy. Behavioral economists like to talk about using "nudges" instead of traditional paternalist or libertarian approaches to regulation. Game thinking offers an alternative built on a richer account of human motivation. In a wide range of contexts, game elements and design techniques are offering new tools to achieve public policy goals, while also creating new challenges that must be addressed.

Lunch will be served.

Janeway, whose presentation, “What I Learned by Doing capitalism,” will argue that the history of American venture capital offers significant insight on the unlikely underpinnings of the Innovation Economy. From Prof. Janeway: “The transformational technological innovations that generate ‘new economies’ are deployed as networks whose value in use cannot be known at the outset. Consequently, the Innovation Economy depends on sources of funding unconcerned with economic value, which leads to an appreciation of the historical role of financial speculation and the state. These institutions have proven critical to the successive waves of technological innovation that have transformed economic life over the past 25 years.” Alexander J. Field, the Michael and Mary Orradre Professor of Economics, Santa Clara University, will provide a response to Dr. Janeway’s remarks.

Reception to follow.

Lievrouw

USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is pleased to host the 9th Annual Walt Fisher Lecture, honoring emeritus professor and former School of Communication director Walter Fisher. This year’s guest is Leah A. Lievrouw, USC Annenberg alumna and professor in the Department of Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research and teaching focus on the relationship between communication technologies and social change. Her most recent book, Alternative and Activist New Media (Polity, 2011) explores the uses of new media technologies by artists and activists who challenge mainstream culture, politics and society.

The talk will focus on the topic: Communication and Technology: Key Moments in New Media Scholarship.

Over the last several decades, the study of new media – broadly speaking, the uses and influence of technology, especially networked computing and telecommunications, in the communication process – has grown from an esoteric sideline at a few academic programs (including the Annenberg School at USC), into a central focus of communication research. This talk will trace this shifting disciplinary landscape, highlighting four “key moments” in the study of communication and technology: the influence of indirect effects theories and arguments for merging the study of mass and interpersonal communication; the rise of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and computers as media; the post-browser cultural turn toward studies of communication and media technology in everyday life; and the current resurgence of interest in the material, built character of communication technologies. Ideas from each of these moments have helped shape the ways that communication scholars today investigate and think about the consequences and significance of technology as an inseparable part of communicative and social action.

For decades, audience exposure to media was how media performance was measured in the commercial marketplace. Recently, the concept of audience engagement has eclipsed exposure. What does engagement mean, and how is it measured? For media initiatives with social, civic and cultural missions – which conceive of audiences as citizens, not just consumers – how might measures of engagement be adapted to measure impact? The talk launches the Measuring Media Impact and Engagement series sponsored by USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center.

The talk is titled: "Off the Line: Independent Television and the Expansion of the Creative Economy"

From Christian: "For over a decade, independent producers have flocked to the web to distribute their own television series. A space of experimentation and autonomy outside Hollywood, the market for independent television reveals how our theories of production, representation and distribution must expand to account for work done outside the "nine-to-five" of creative workers, who are actively reimagining what television can be in the 21st century."

No RSVP needed.
Want to raise capital for your business, or get startup funds from more than friends and family? How do you turn customers into investors -- and evangelists for your brand? And what's the difference between Kickstarter and the new world of securities-based crowdfunding?

Join Annenberg Family Chair in Communication Leadership Geoffrey Cowan in welcoming Brian Goldsmith, president of PubVest, for a discussion of the emerging crowdfunding landscape. The recently passed JOBS Act introduces major changes to the ways entrepreneurs and small businesses can raise money online. So what will this new world of financing mean for the ability of entrepreneurs to launch and grow a business?

PubVest president Brian Goldsmith, former political producer to Katie Couric at the CBS Evening News, will lead a presentation and discussion of the risks and rewards of investment-based crowdfunding, and what this new world of financing means for new businesses’ ability to launch and grow. For a discussion of China’s foreign policy objectives and the current state of its relations with North America, Asia, Africa, and Europe we turn to three of the country’s most experienced diplomats, Ambassadors Lu Fengding, Mei Ping, and Zhou Gang.

Join the USC Institute for Global Health and the USC Annenberg/California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships for a discussion on using the positive forces of peer pressure to impact global health.

Featured speaker Tina Rosenberg, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, will base her talk on research she gathered in writing her latest book: Join the Club: How Peer Pressure can Transform the World. She also co-authors the New York Times’ Fixes column, which highlights people working toward solutions in the world.

Join the Club is the story of an extraordinarily powerful kind of social change. It has led teens in America to rebel against cigarettes and teens in Africa to protect themselves from AIDS. It has organized a passive and fearful citizenry subjugated by a dictator into the nonviolent army that overthrew him. Through stories drawn from the affluent suburbs of Chicago to the impoverished shanties of rural India, this book will not only revolutionize the way you look at the world, but give you the power to change it.

For more information, email global.health@usc.edu.
