Fashion + Social + Media: Influencers in the age of Instagram
This symposium will explore how the Internet and social media economy are changing the way fashion is represented, understood, consumed, and marketed. Bringing together the perspectives of scholars and influencers, the event will feature two consecutive panels designed to shed light on this relatively new arena for communicating fashion. Panelists will discuss business practices and personal labor. They also will consider identity (specifically gender, race/ethnicity, body type, age) as it relates to personal style, self-branding, and target audiences. See participant bios here.
Scholar Panel: 4:00 pm - 5:15 p.m.
Influencer Panel: 5:30 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.
Immediately following the panels, join us for a reception. Installations set up across the Wallis Annenberg lobby will invite guests to explore other ways fashion is communicated both historically and in the present day:
“On the Page & Screen” will feature a retro living room set (courtesy of Galerie Sommerlath) with vintage fashion magazines and a reel of fashion inspired media. Relax and post some selfies!
“On the Catwalk” will feature a pedestrian-inspired crosswalk. Another photo op to make your mark!
“On the Street” will feature artist Gregory Siff creating a graffiti wall in real time. Chat him up!
“On the ‘Net” will feature a paper doll station where guests can create and outfit dolls in their likeness via mix ‘n match clothing cut outs inspired by fashion bloggers. Something to bring home!
