Annenberg Research Seminar: Digital Citizens/Datafied Selves: Social Media Activism and the Issue of Political Profiling

Monday, September 19, 2016 - 12 p.m. USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism (ASC), 207

Veronica Barassi, lecturer and convenor, Goldsmiths, University of London, explores how social media technologies have transformed civic engagement and argues that what differentiates political participation on social media from other forms of engagement is the personalization and the visibility of politics. The interconnectedness between these two dimensions creates a situation where the political is both personal and visible. In this context, the talk will show, fundamental questions arise on the social tensions that emerge as the digital traces produced through social media activism enable the political profiling of citizens.

Lunch will be served.
