Melina Sherman is a doctoral candidate at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. She is currently finishing her dissertation, "How it Hurts: The Cultural Politics of Pain in the U.S. Opioid Epidemic," which traces the cultural, historical and institutional conditions underpinning the ongoing crisis of opioid abuse in the United States.

Her research areas of interest include critical cultural studies, the social study of science and technology (STS), biopolitics, the history of medicine, and the reciprocal relationship between culture and economics.
