Student Spotlight: Courtney Manning

Full Name: Courtney Renee Manning

What is your hometown? Pomona, Calif. (Where the Los Angeles County Fair is!)

What is your favorite thing about your hometown? It’s small and I know all the spots to shop.

Major? Public Relations

Minor? Spanish & Marketing

What is your expected graduation date? May 2013

Why did you choose to attend Annenberg? I chose Annenberg because it’s simply the best. Of all the schools I visited, I couldn’t find one, that better matched my career goals and offered as many great resources, networks, and opportunities in my field. When I came to Annenberg, it just felt right-it was the best decision I could’ve made.

Tell us about an experience or opportunity you've had at Annenberg? I can’t pick just one. Every experience I’ve had here, from working at the Annenberg Student Services front desk, and being able to communicate with the advisers, to taking classes with real professionals in the field, I’ve learned so much already here, and every internship I’ve had was given to me through Annenberg-the connections here are pretty much endless.

What makes Annenberg special? Annenberg is special because you can always go there when you need something or just to chill, and do homework. If I have time between classes or need to pass the time, I always come here, it’s not even a thought. Oh and Annenberg always has food somewhere, so that’s pretty special.

What's one thing at USC that no student should miss? No student should miss networking events. They’re fun, there’s usually food, and chances are you’ll score an internship! I know I have. It’s a great way to practice your professional etiquette too.

Tell us about an experience you’ve had outside of class (an internship, research project, publication, start-up, etc.). This past summer I got a business internship at Pepsico corporate and the whole reason why I got it was because I was a student here. It was a great learning experience-I was able to learn about the standard protocol in a fortune 50 company and edit their Standard Operating Procedures. It made me feel pretty important. I also got to keep track of inventory and make locations for everything in the distribution center’s warehouse. I found that the company really values its employees and although I would like a career that keeps me more on my feet and is more hands-on, I would love to work for the company again someday in a different department. It was a cool experience.

How does your major (and minor) fit into your life's plan? Originally, I was a Print major wanting to start a publication, that featured non-profits, and cause-related topics. Sophomore year, I switched to Public Relations, which better fit my career goals. With this major, and my minors Spanish & Marketing, I still hope to create a publication, that advocates for these type of organizations, but with an understanding of my public, strategic marketing and being bilingual, I felt it would give me a one-up in the field.

Who's your favorite professor or staff person and why? Aw, my favorite staff person here is my boss at Annenberg Student Services, Sal Navarro. He is not only a great boss but a great mentor as well: he has given me great career, and life advice, and I know that I can always come to him when in need and he will understand.  :)
