Mentoring applications for Intersections: South LA Report due Sept. 16

Intersections: South LA Report facilitates a high school mentoring program, which sends USC mentors to local South Los Angeles high schools to teach multimedia journalism skills. Intersections serves Manual Arts, Foshay Learning Center and Dorsey High Schools. Mentors develop valuable relationships with young students, inspiring and training a future generation of journalists in print, video, radio and online media (apply here). Duties include:

  • Going to class each week with a lesson plan. By the end of your lesson, the class should have learned a new concept or skill that applies to the field of journalism. If mentor schedules allow, we will send groups of mentors in to classes together.
  • Taking class attendance every week.
  • Generating one article, video or multimedia content from your class every two weeks that could potentially be posted on Intersections.
  • Inspiring student interest in journalism.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Communication, PR, Advertising, Journalism or related field.
  • Must have skills in any of the following: photography, video, editing (writing, audio, video), writing, interviewing techniques, researching, design (Adobe Photoshop, InDesign), computer/web literacy, social media, creating slideshows.
  • Passion for community service and mentoring.
  • Dedicated, responsible and highly organized individuals.
