Doctoral candidate and research fellow featured at Active Cultures event

An all-Annenberg program on global pop phenomena this Friday opens the 2011-2012 season of the Asia Pacific Museum’s Active Cultures series.

First, Ph.D. candidate Alex Leavitt will talk about a holographic Japanese pop idol. Then Jennifer Taylor, Annenberg research fellow, will discuss Muslim hip-hop and youth culture with clips from two of her recent films, "Ramadan Primetime" and "New Muslim Cool."

New Muslim Cool has recently been acquired for national broadcasts in Japan, Poland, Holland, and India. Next week it will air on the Sundance Channel in Canada and it is scheduled to start streaming on Netflix this month. And a member of the New Muslim Cool film team is in the Maldives right now doing screenings and workshops through ongoing partnership with the State Department.

Tickets for Friday’s program are free for museum members and $10 for the general public.
